Surrey/ICE Scholarship in Civil Engineering

For each year of your civil engineering degree, you will receive a scholarship of about 2,270 EUR per year (£1,950) as well as a paid placement in the industry during each summer break. The programme is run by the University of Surrey in partnership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and a number of construction companies. Around the middle of your first year of study, you will be assigned a partner company. This company will fund your scholarship and provide you with practical training throughout your degree. This is the only university scholarship officially supported by the ICE, and it gives you a fast-track route to becoming a Chartered Engineer.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying civil engineering at the University of Surrey, either on a foundation year or on a BEng/MEng degree programme.
• Study level: You are a Bachelor’s student.
• Where you are from: You are classified as a ‘Home’ student (UK).
• Motivation: In your application and during the interview, you can demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for the field of civil engineering.

How to apply

Please apply by 25 March, 17:00 UK time using the online form on the Surrey website. You will be notified in early April as to whether you have been invited to an interview. The interviews will take place on 17 April.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very narrowly defined. You must be a British undergraduate student studying civil engineering at a specific university, so the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you meet these criteria and can demonstrate genuine enthusiasm in both your application and your interview, your chances are good. The allocation of places depends on whether a match can be found with a partner company; therefore, a clear, convincing application is more important than the size of the applicant pool.
