Medical Physiology and Therapeutics Foundation Year Scholarship

In the first year of your Bachelor’s degree programme in ‘Medical Physiology and Therapeutics’, you will receive a one-off payment of £1,000 (about 1,150 EUR). This amount is paid out exclusively in the first year and is not awarded again subsequently. It is provided by the University of Nottingham and is intended for first-year students on this degree programme who receive a means-tested student loan (financial support based on your household income).

Who can apply

• Degree: You are in the first year of the full-time Bachelor’s degree programme in ‘Medical Physiology and Therapeutics’ at the University of Nottingham (UK campus).
• Fee status: You are considered a British ‘domestic student’. This usually means that you have lived in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years before starting your degree. Refugees and migrant workers from the European Union may also meet these requirements.
• Student loan: You are receiving the means-tested maintenance grant (the means-tested part of the student loan for living costs) in full or in part, and have applied for the maximum amount.
• No other scholarship: You are not currently receiving any other external scholarship.
• Attendance: You must attend at least 80% of your scheduled modules. If you fall short of this requirement, it could cost you the award.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities may apply, provided they meet the above-mentioned criteria for ‘UK Home Fee’ status.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the university’s online form. The application period begins on 22 September 2025 and ends on 19 November 2025. Please include a personal statement in which you outline your interest in the natural sciences and your long-term commitment to the subject, for example through work experience, voluntary work or activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. You will receive a response within four weeks of the application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This award has very strict eligibility criteria. It is aimed exclusively at first-year students on a specific degree programme at Nottingham who are also in receipt of a means-tested student loan, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria and put real effort into your personal statement, your chances are good. If you apply well in advance of the November deadline, you’ll avoid any last-minute risks.
