About this scholarship
What the Sandman Scholarship gives you
You will receive about 253 EUR per month (2,000 GBP per year) for the three years of your Bachelor’s degree, totalling approximately 6,000 GBP. The funding is provided by Mitch Gaglardi and the Sandman Hotel Group (UK) and is paid out via Newcastle University in England. The aim is to inspire more people to take an interest in engineering and computer science, to address the skills shortage in the North-East, and to attract more women to these disciplines.
Who can apply
- University: You are studying for a Bachelor’s degree at Newcastle University.
- Subject: You are studying mechanical engineering (preferred) or computer science.
- Study year: Applications are made during the first year of study (level 1).
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, although preference will be given to students resident in the United Kingdom (‘Home’).
- Gender: Women are given preference, as the aim is to close the gender gap in the fields of engineering and computer science.
- Grades: You have achieved excellent results at school.
How to apply
Applications must be made via Newcastle University, which publishes the forms and deadlines on its scholarships pages. The application deadline is 14 November. The selection process is highly competitive.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is very limited. It is tied to a specific university and two degree programmes, and is explicitly intended for women and students resident in the United Kingdom, meaning that the pool of suitable applicants is small. If you are a woman starting a degree in mechanical engineering or computer science in Newcastle with excellent grades, your chances are good. Apply as early as possible in your first year of study, provided the application deadline allows.
