Scholarship for Sporting Excellence (University of Roehampton)

You will receive a scholarship of £500 to £1,500 per year (about 575 to 1,725 EUR). The exact amount depends on how good you are as an athlete. It will be paid out for each academic year, provided you pass each year and progress to the next academic year. In addition to the money, your travel and entry fees for competitions will be covered, and you will have access to the university gym (run by Nuffield Health), sports massages, additional training and coaching, mentoring (regular one-to-one support from an experienced counsellor), as well as support with academic matters and day-to-day life. The scholarship is awarded by the University of Roehampton in London. In return, you will represent the university at national student competitions, maintain high standards and assist with university events.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Roehampton or have accepted a place to study there.
• Level: All level: Bachelor’s or Master’s students, including those on extended degree programmes.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: Both UK and international students are welcome to apply.
• Sport: You have competed for your country or region, or clearly have the potential to reach that level. All sports are welcome, particularly those in which national student competitions are held (BUCS sports).
• Commitment: You can show that you take your sport seriously and successfully balance it with your studies.

How to apply

First, apply for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme at Roehampton University. Then complete the scholarship application form on the university’s sports scholarships page. Once you have enrolled, your application will be assessed by a panel chaired by the Sport Roehampton Manager. You are welcome to contact the panel in advance to arrange a non-binding discussion.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a small target group: competitive athletes who are already taking part in competitions at regional or national level and who enrol at a specific university. As a result, the pool of applicants is small compared to open scholarships. If you have a proven track record of sporting success and can demonstrate that you can balance this with your studies, your chances are good. An early, informal discussion with the selection panel will help you assess your suitability.
