About this scholarship
Sport Scholarship Award (Team Surrey)
You will receive a cash grant of at least about 1,150 EUR per year (£1,000), which will be paid in three instalments spread over the academic year. As the scholarship usually runs for three years, the total amount may be around 6,900 EUR (£6,000). You do not have to repay the money. It supports student athletes who compete at a high level in their sport. It is funded by sponsoring companies, including Schneider Ede & Ravenscroft and the law firm Penningtons Manches Cooper. The programme is run by ‘Team Surrey’, the University of Surrey’s sports programme.
Who can apply
- University: You are about to start your degree at the University of Surrey, or you are already studying there.
- Study level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Sport level: You are currently competing at elite or junior level for Team Surrey in a competitive sport, or at national or international level in another sport. You may also apply if you clearly have the potential to reach this level.
- Squad link: You are supported by Team Surrey’s ‘Dual Career Programme’ or are a member of one of its competitive teams (women’s or men’s rugby, rowing, swimming, basketball, squash, cricket).
- Coach backing: A coach from Team Surrey, a coach from the national governing body or a team manager must provide written support for your application.
- Funding: Priority is given to athletes who do not yet receive financial support from their national federation or a professional sports club.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via an online form. Please attach evidence of your sporting achievements and a letter of recommendation from a coach or team manager. The application deadline is 29 August. A panel will review the applications from the beginning of September and send out acceptance notifications around a week later. As the number of scholarships is limited, meeting the criteria does not guarantee a place.
How realistic are your chances?
The awarding of this funding is strictly regulated: you must be studying at the University of Surrey, competing at a very high level, and have a coach who supports you. This means that the pool of eligible applicants remains small. Places are limited, and the sponsors give priority to athletes who do not receive any other financial support. It is therefore particularly important to provide a clear, well-documented account of both your results and your financial need. If you meet these criteria, apply before the deadline in August – then you’ll have a good chance of success.
