Sporting Excellence Scholarship at University College Birmingham

You will receive direct funding for competitions, training costs and equipment, divided into two tiers. As a Talented Performer (competing at regional, district or higher level), you will receive up to £1,500, spread evenly over 3 years. As a Elite Performer (competing at international level), you will receive up to £3,000 spread over 3 years, and a committee may approve additional grants. Both tiers also include a support package: strength and conditioning training, nutritional advice, sports psychology, sports therapy with access to injury clinics, free gym membership, your BUCS entry fees, and kit bearing the UCB logo. University College Birmingham awards up to 6 of these scholarships each year.

Who can apply

• Sporting level: You take part in competitions at least at regional or district level – or at international level if you are a top-class athlete – and can provide evidence of this.
• Where you study: You have accepted an offer to study a full-time degree programme at University College Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
• Degree: Your degree programme lasts at least 1 years and leads to a higher education qualification. This includes Bachelor’s degree programmes (FdA, FdSc, BA, BSc) and Master’s degree programmes (MSc, PG Dip).
• Nationality: Open to applicants from all countries.
• New to the scheme: You have not yet received this scholarship, and you are not repeating or deferring your studies at the same level.
• Visa: If you require a visa for the UK, you will only receive the grant once that visa has been issued.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via an online form. Please specify the category for which you are applying and attach comprehensive evidence of your sporting achievements. The application period begins on 1 June 2026 and ends on 2 October 2026. Applications will be assessed strictly in the order in which they are received, so you’ll have a better chance if you apply early.

How realistic are your chances?

As only up to 6 scholarships are awarded each year and the scheme is open to applicants worldwide, competition is fierce, and places are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Your chances depend heavily on your proven sporting achievements: a strong track record at regional, national or international level is what sets applicants apart from the rest. Apply as soon as the application window opens, as applications submitted early will be considered first.
