Zepler Scholarship

During your first year of study, you will receive a one-off payment of 1,000 GBP (about 1,150 EUR), which will be paid at the end of your first semester. This grant is aimed at new Bachelor’s students studying Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton who have taken part in one of the university’s summer taster courses and subsequently achieved the required grades. It is named after Eric Zepler, who founded the UK’s first department of electronics in Southampton in 1947. You do not need to demonstrate financial need, as the amount of the grant does not depend on your family’s income.

Who can apply

• Taster course: You took part in one of the school’s summer taster courses in electronics or biomedical electronics in the years 2023, 2024 or 2025.
• Degree: You are enrolling on a Bachelor’s degree programme in Electronics or Computer Science at the University of Southampton.
• Grades: You must meet or exceed the requirements set out in your offer of admission and achieve at least A*AA at A-level in the subjects specified therein.
• Fee status: You are classified as a student subject to UK tuition fees.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they meet the eligibility criteria for UK tuition fees.
• One award rule: You may only receive one scholarship from the University of Southampton per year, but you may combine this with a student grant (a separate, means-tested form of financial support).

How to apply

There is no separate application process and no application deadline. If you have taken part in a taster course and subsequently meet all the entry requirements, your application will be considered automatically.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very strictly defined: you must have taken part in a specific taster course, enrol at a specific school and achieve A*AA grades. If you meet all three requirements, there is neither a competition nor a ranking, as every pupil who meets the conditions receives the money. The real hurdle is the exam results, not the selection process against other applicants.
