About this award / prize

Benefit

As the top chemistry student in your year group at the University of Birmingham, you will receive a one-off cash prize of up to about 122 EUR. The amount increases with each academic year: approximately 85 EUR (75 GBP) in the year 1, 90 EUR (80 GBP) in year 2 and 115 EUR (100 GBP) in year 3. One prize is awarded per year group. The School of Chemistry awards this prize, which is funded by a donation from the daughters of Jesse Ascough in memory of their father.

Eligibility

  • What you study: You are studying chemistry at undergraduate level at the University of Birmingham in the UK.
  • Grades: You’re the top chemistry student in your year in the May exams.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The prize is awarded solely on the basis of your exam results from May, and the top student in each year group receives it.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one pupil per year group wins, so the prize is awarded to the best individual – it is not, therefore, something you can specifically aim for. The cash prize is small, so the real value lies in the recognition. If you’ve set yourself the goal of being among the best in your year group in the May exams, the prize will follow naturally.
