What the Heslop Memorial Prize gives you

You will receive a one-off cash prize of approximately 29 EUR (£25) from the University of Birmingham. This prize is awarded to a particularly outstanding second-year student and is funded by a donation from the late Dr Thomas Pretious Heslop, MD.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Birmingham.
• Level: You are in the second year of your Bachelor’s degree (BSc or B.Eng.).
• Subject: You are studying a subject in the natural sciences or engineering, such as chemistry, physics, biology or engineering. The eligible subject area changes every year, as the prize is awarded alternately to these subject areas; therefore, your subject is only eligible for funding in certain years.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Results: You are one of the top pupils in your year group.

How realistic are your chances?

The prize is awarded to just one of the best second-year students, and only if it falls within your field of study. In most years, it isn’t even up for selection in your field of study. When it’s your turn, it is academic performance that counts, not an application that you can actively push forward – so it’s difficult to plan for. Think of it as a small honour that may be bestowed upon you if you are amongst the very best in your year – and not as financial support that you can rely on.
