The Richard Knight Prize

This prize recognises the best academic performance in the first-year physics laboratory at University of Birmingham. It is awarded by the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, usually to one student per year. Your performance in all experimental work and project work undertaken during the first year of study is taken into account. The prize is a recognition of outstanding laboratory results; however, it does not constitute ongoing funding, and no monetary award is provided.

Who can apply

• Course: You are studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Physics at the University of Birmingham.
• Study year: You are in your first year of study, as the mark is based on the laboratory work from the 1 academic year.
• Performance: You achieve the best results in both the experiments and the project work in the first-year laboratory.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The faculty will select the winner based on your marks in the first-year physics practical course.

How realistic are your chances?

Only first-year physics students at the University of Birmingham are eligible, and the prize is usually awarded to just one person each year, so competition is very fierce. It is not possible to apply directly. The key factor is to achieve the best results in the 1 year group’s laboratory. You should view the prize as a form of recognition to strive for through your laboratory work, rather than as financial support on which you can rely when making your plans.
