About this scholarship

What the Sheina Marshall Memorial Fund gives you

You will receive financial support to undertake courses in marine biology and carry out marine research in Millport, a research site on the Isle of Cumbrae in Scotland. The fund can cover a field course with accommodation (for example, on the topic of marine and animal biodiversity), a short research placement or internship, or an ongoing research project. It is administered by the University of London in memory of the Scottish marine biologist Sheina Marshall. The funds are channelled to the colleges, which decide how to allocate them. The exact amount is not published and is determined by your college.

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying marine biology at a college of the University of London in Millport. At present, these are either Queen Mary University of London or Royal Holloway.
  • Level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
  • Field of study: You are taking courses in marine biology or carrying out research in Millport.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Each college awards the scholarships itself. Please apply via your own college – Queen Mary or Royal Holloway – and not via the University of London. Check with your department well in advance, as funds are limited and are allocated locally.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must be studying at one of two specific London colleges and taking a course in marine biology at Millport, meaning that very few students are eligible at all. If you clearly fit this profile, the small number of applicants will work in your favour.
