Amit Mehta Prize

You will receive a one-off cash prize of about 377 EUR as well as a public award at the University of Leeds. The prize honours a student who, despite a disability or chronic illness, has achieved well and demonstrated determination in difficult circumstances. It is awarded annually as part of the University’s ‘Celebrate+’ event. The prize was established by the parents of Amit Mehta, a graduate in cell biology at Leeds who had multiple disabilities and who died in 2005 whilst undertaking his PhD research on Alzheimer’s disease.

Who can apply

• University: You are a student at the University of Leeds.
• Disability or health condition: You live with a disability, a sensory impairment or a chronic condition.
• Achievement and resilience: Despite significant obstacles, you have achieved academic excellence or made a contribution to university and community life.
• Field of study: Anyone interested is welcome to apply.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying in Leeds.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an annual award presented to one or two students. You cannot apply yourself: you must be nominated by a tutor or a department. The criteria are quite specific, so you must demonstrate both a disability or health condition and a proven track record of academic achievement and perseverance at the University of Leeds. If a lecturer recognises your situation and you clearly meet the requirements, your chances are good, as there isn’t a large pool of applicants to compete with.
