About this scholarship
Higgs Scholarships at the University of Edinburgh
The amount of about 11,500 EUR (£10,000) will be deducted from your tuition fees for one academic year. You will not receive any cash. The amount will be deducted directly from your tuition fees for the Master’s programme. The School of Physics and Astronomy awards twelve of these scholarships each year. They are named after the Nobel Laureate Peter Higgs, who worked in Edinburgh.
Who can apply
- Degree: You have applied for one of the four one-year MSc programmes in Edinburgh: Theoretical Physics, Mathematical Physics, Particle and Nuclear Physics, or Astrobiology and Planetary Sciences.
- Enrolment: You study full time.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, including students from the UK and abroad.
- Grades: Outstanding academic achievement is the main criterion and determines who wins.
- Financial need: Financial difficulties can also work in your favour, particularly if the scholarship is a prerequisite for you to be able to take up your place at university.
How to apply
First, apply for one of the MSc programmes. Then apply via the University of Edinburgh’s scholarship portal. The application deadline is 1 June. You will be notified of the result by mid-July.
How realistic are your chances?
The twelve scholarships are spread across four specialised Master’s programmes in physics and astronomy. As only students who have applied for these specific programmes are eligible to apply, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. Selection is based on academic merit, so a strong track record will set you apart from other applicants. If you can demonstrate solid results and show that the tuition fee reduction is crucial for you, your prospects are good.
