Brian May MSc Scholarship in Astrophysics by Research

You will receive a one-off 2,300 EUR (2,000 GBP) discount on your tuition fees for one academic year. This is a fee discount, not cash. It reduces the amount you owe the university and therefore does not cover the cost of rent or living expenses. The prize is awarded to a student on the ‘MSc Astrophysics by Research’ Master’s programme at the University of Hertfordshire and is presented once a year. It is named after Brian May, the guitarist with the band Queen, who also holds a PhD in astrophysics.

Who can apply

• Programme: You are enrolled on the Master’s programme in ‘Astrophysics with a Research Focus’ at the University of Hertfordshire.
• Study mode: You are a full-time student. Part-time students are not eligible for this grant.
• Where you study: On the campus in Hatfield, United Kingdom.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, whether from the UK or abroad.
• Prior degree: To be admitted to the Master’s programme (MSc), you will generally need a very good Bachelor’s degree in a science subject such as physics, astronomy, mathematics or computer science, or an integrated Master’s degree (MPhys/MSci). Substantial, relevant professional experience may also be taken into account.

How to apply

You do not apply for this scholarship yourself. If you meet the eligibility criteria, the university will invite you to apply during your first semester, and an academic committee will decide who receives the scholarship. Firstly, you will need a place on a Master’s programme (MSc); applications for a place starting in October are accepted until June.

How realistic are your chances?

The pool of applicants is very small. Only full-time students on this one specialised Master’s programme at a single university are considered, so you do not have to compete against applicants from across the country. Once you have secured a place on the MSc programme, you will automatically be invited to apply, which removes a common hurdle. Your chances depend on how you perform compared to the small group of your fellow students on the programme this year.
