About this scholarship

What the E.K. Chambers Studentship covers

You get your full tuition fees paid, a grant for living costs, and some free meals at your college. The award lasts up to three years while you study full-time for a DPhil in English at the University of Oxford. A DPhil is Oxford's name for a research PhD. The money comes from a gift left by Lady Chambers, widow of the literary scholar Sir Edmund Kerchever Chambers. Oxford's Faculty of English runs it together with Corpus Christi College and Somerville College, where you would be based.

Who can apply

  • Your course: You have an offer for a full-time DPhil in English (a research PhD in English Literature) at Oxford.
  • Your first degree: You already hold an honours degree in any subject from a university in the British Isles.
  • Classical knowledge: You know Latin and Greek literature and languages well. This is a requirement, not your study subject.
  • Your college: You are based at Corpus Christi College or Somerville College.
  • Nationality: Open to UK (Home) students only.

How to apply

There is no separate application. You are automatically considered when you apply for the DPhil through the normal English Faculty admissions process. The graduate application deadline is in late January (24 January).

How realistic are your chances?

When it runs, this award is cut very narrowly. You must be a UK student, hold a British-Isles honours degree, know your classics well and hold a DPhil offer in English. That makes the eligible group small. If you clearly meet all of these and secure a place, your prospects are better than for broad, open scholarships. Note that the scholarship is not open for 2026 or 2027 entry.
