About this scholarship

The Fountain Court Chambers Scholarship

You get about 17,500 EUR (15,000 GBP) for one year to study the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford. Despite its name, the BCL is a one-year taught master's in law. One scholarship is awarded each year. It is funded by Fountain Court Chambers, a London group of barristers (courtroom lawyers).

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are studying, or admitted to study, the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at Oxford.
  • College: Any Oxford college works. There is no restriction.
  • Nationality: Open to all nationalities. UK, EU and overseas students are treated equally.
  • Field of interest: Applicants interested in private law (law between people and companies, such as contracts, property or damages) are preferred. This is a bonus, not a requirement.
  • Financial need: You complete a means assessment form that reports your financial situation.

How to apply

There is no separate application. If you are offered a BCL place, you are automatically considered. This is based on your BCL application and the means assessment form, which is linked in your offer letter.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow: only one is given each year, and only to BCL students at Oxford, who are already a small and highly selected group. Getting a BCL offer is the real hurdle, since the scholarship then rides on that same application. If you are admitted to the BCL, show financial need and lean towards private law, you fit exactly what the funder wants.
