E&C Bufton Bursary

You will receive a one-off payment of about 700 EUR (£600), which will be paid out to you once you have enrolled. It is provided by the Faculty of Law at UCL for students commencing a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) at University College London. This is a means-tested scholarship, which means it is aimed at students from low-income households and is intended to help cover the costs of studying.

Who can apply

• Course: You have been offered a place on the LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree programme at UCL starting in September 2026. This may be a firm offer, meaning you have met all the entry requirements, or a ‘near-miss’ offer with a guaranteed place.
• Fee status: You have the fee status ‘UK (Home)’ and live in the United Kingdom.
• Household income: Your household income is 42,875 GBP per year or less.
• School: You attended a state-funded, fee-free school. If you have ever attended a fee-paying school, you are not eligible to apply.
• First degree: You have not yet obtained a degree from UCL or any other higher education institution in any subject area.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via an online form. This must include a statement of purpose in which you explain why you are applying for the scholarship. The application deadline is 2 September. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to a short online video interview. A committee from the Faculty of Law will then decide who is to be awarded the scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship has very strict eligibility criteria. You must have been offered a place on the LLB programme at UCL, be a UK fee-paying student, have attended a state school and come from a household with an income of less than 42,875 GBP. This means that the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria and prepare your personal statement and interview carefully, your prospects are good. The amount of funding is modest, which is why fewer applicants apply than for UCL’s more substantial law scholarships.
