About this scholarship

UWE Bristol Bursary

During your Bachelor’s degree at University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), you will receive an annual grant which you will never have to repay. There are three tiers, but you can only claim one of them, even if several apply to you:

  • Low Income Bursary: or 585 (£500) euros per year for students from low-income households.
  • Childcare Bursary: or 1,930 (£1,650) euros per year if you also receive the state childcare allowance.
  • Cares Bursary: approximately 1,930 (£1,650) euros per year for students with little or no financial support from their families. This tier includes a one-off grant of approximately 585 (£500) euros upon completion of their studies, guaranteed accommodation in a hall of residence throughout the year, and personalised career guidance.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are completing your first bachelor’s degree at UWE Bristol and will earn at least 30 credits this year. Postgraduate programmes and short vocational courses do not count towards this total.
  • Field of study: All compartments are open.
  • Student loan: You are receiving a UK student loan from Student Finance England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.
  • Financial need: According to the Student Loans Company’s assessment, your household income is 29,300 (£25,000) euros per year or less.
  • No earlier degree: You do not yet hold a university degree. An exception applies if the NHS funded your previous course of study.
  • Extra help (Cares Bursary): You grew up in care, are studying without financial support from your parents, are caring for a family member without pay, or have refugee status or humanitarian protection status.

How to apply

You do not need to complete a separate form for the ‘Low Income’ and ‘Cares’ grants. Simply apply for student finance each year and agree to disclose your household income to UWE. The university will then automatically assess your application during the first semester. For the childcare grant, please email UWE a copy of the letter confirming your state childcare allowance.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition where you win or lose. If you are studying at UWE Bristol, receive a UK student loan and your household income is below the threshold of £25,000, you will receive the grant automatically. The only reason for exclusion is if you do not meet one of these criteria. Please ensure that Student Finance has your correct income details and that you have consented to the sharing of this information.
