Oxford Bursary

You will receive an annual grant of non-repayable grant of about EUR 1,300 to EUR 5,050 (from 1,100 to 4,390 GBP) to cover your tuition fees and living costs at the University of Oxford. The lower your family’s income, the higher the grant will be. It is paid out every year for the entire duration of your studies, and your income is reassessed each year. If you live more than 80 miles from Oxford in the United Kingdom, you will also receive an annual travel allowance of approximately EUR 255 (220 GBP). This amount increases to approximately 640 euros (550 GBP) if you live more than 150 miles away. The grant is paid directly by the University of Oxford.

Who can apply

• University: You have been offered a place at the University of Oxford.
• Degree: This is your first bachelor’s degree. Students on the ‘Graduate Entry Medicine’ programme, PGCE students without a teacher training grant, and full-time students on the ‘Undergraduate Certificate’ or ‘Diploma in Theological Studies’ programmes are also eligible.
• Fee status: You pay tuition fees at the UK ‘home’ rate. This applies to UK students, nationals of the Republic of Ireland living in the UK or Ireland, and nationals of the EU, the EEA or Switzerland with ‘settled’ or ‘pre-settled’ status who meet the residence requirements.
• Financial need: Your annual household income is 50,000 GBP or less.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Income level: If your household income is 32,500 GBP or less, you will receive the Crankstart Scholarship (a separate grant from the University of Oxford for students on lower incomes) instead of this scholarship. You cannot receive both scholarships at the same time. If your household income is 32,500 GBP or more, you will receive the Oxford Scholarship.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The University of Oxford automatically assesses your eligibility based on the means test from your application for student finance to the UK Government. Both you and the people you live with must undergo a means test. If you meet the criteria, the University of Oxford will notify you at the start of your first semester.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a means-tested grant. Any student who pays tuition fees at the ‘Home Rate’, is undertaking their first bachelor’s degree and whose household income is below 50,000 GBP will receive this grant. There is no selection process or ranking. If you meet these criteria and submit your application for student finance by the deadline, you will receive the grant.
