About this scholarship

University of Sheffield Bursary Scheme

You will receive up to about 1,450 EUR per year (£1,250) from the University of Sheffield, paid out for each academic year. This is a grant, not a loan, so you do not have to repay this amount; it is awarded in addition to your government student finance. The amount depends mainly on your household income: around 1,160 EUR (£1,000) per year if your household income is £25,000 or less, around 580 EUR (£500) for £25,001-£30,000, and around 290 EUR (£250) for £30,001-£40,000.. In two cases, you may be eligible for an additional grant of approximately 290 EUR (£250) per year: if you live in a low-income, disadvantaged area, or if you live in the Sheffield City Region (where fewer people go to university) and have achieved grades ABB or better at A-level. You will retain the grant during a year of study abroad, but not during a work placement or a year of practical training.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree at the University of Sheffield, which is eligible for a bachelor’s grant.
  • Where you're from: You are a student paying domestic fees, i.e. you are normally resident in England or an equivalent region of the United Kingdom. Students from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not eligible for the two postcode-based supplements.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Student finance: You have applied to Student Finance England (or the relevant regional office) for a loan to cover your tuition fees, as well as an income-based living costs loan (a loan that is means-tested based on your household income). If you do not wish to take out a loan, you can apply for a £0 loan and will still be subject to a means test.
  • Financial need: Your household income is £40,000 or less. Income is not taken into account for the Sheffield City Region’s supplementary benefit.
  • Second degree: If this is your second university degree, you may not meet the entry requirements.

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application for the standard grant. The university will automatically check whether you are eligible based on the information you provided to ‘Student Finance England’ and ‘UCAS’. The checks take place in October, and you will receive an email by the end of the month.

How realistic are your chances?

There is neither a selection process nor a selection procedure here. If you are studying in Sheffield, are classified as a domestic fee-paying student and meet the income threshold, you will receive the funding automatically. The amount of funding depends on your household income: the lower your household income, the more you will receive. Make sure your application to Student Finance is classified as means-tested so that your circumstances can be assessed.
