Anita Borg Systers Pass-It-On Awards

You will receive a one-off cash prize of about 920 EUR (1,000 USD), as well as free registration for the ‘Grace Hopper Celebration’ – the major annual conference for women in the tech industry – and an invitation to the ‘Systers’ networking reception. You can use the money towards your studies, a job or a career change, tuition fees and learning materials, or for your own project to inspire more girls and women to take an interest in computer science. The prizes are awarded by AnitaB.org, a charity that supports women in the tech industry. The money comes from donations made by the ‘Systers’ online community. The name reflects the idea: once the prize has helped you, you are expected to ‘pass it on’ and, in turn, help other women.

Who can apply

• Gender and age: You are a woman over 18.
• Field: You work in the IT or technology sector, or would like to break into it.
• Your project or need: You have a clear plan. This could be a life change, such as going to university or changing jobs, or a project that supports or inspires girls and women in computer science.
• Nationality: Women from all countries are welcome to apply.
• Where you study or work: Any university or employer is fine.
• Reference: You will need a letter of recommendation from someone who is familiar with your previous work and your planned project, such as a teacher, employer or colleague.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the AnitaB.org portal. You must submit a brief project description, a detailed plan and a cost estimate. Your referee must send the letter of recommendation separately by email. The application deadline is 8 July. Only applications accompanied by a letter of reference will be considered.

How realistic are your chances?

The prize is small and open to women in the tech sector worldwide, with applicants from over 20 countries – so the field is very diverse. What sets applications apart is a concrete, well-thought-out project with a clear social benefit and a convincing recommendation. If you can present a concrete plan and back it up with a strong letter of recommendation, your chances are good. A vague idea won’t stand out.
