Darmasiswa Scholarship

During your one-year course in Indonesian language, art and culture in Indonesia, you will receive a monthly living allowance of about 260 EUR (IDR 4,700,000). In addition, you will receive a one-off book allowance of approximately 110 EUR (IDR 2,000,000) and a one-off settlement allowance of approximately 260 EUR (IDR 4,700,000) to help you get started. During the orientation programme in Jakarta, your accommodation and local transport costs will also be covered. You will be issued with a residence permit and local health insurance for the duration of your stay. This is a non-degree programme, meaning you will be taking a language and culture course for one year rather than studying for a degree. The programme is funded by the Indonesian government, and you will study at one of around 54 partner universities across Indonesia. Your international flights are not covered, so you will need to pay for these yourself.

Who can apply

• Nationality: Any nationality, provided your country maintains diplomatic relations with Indonesia.
• Age: You are between 18 and 32 years old.
• Education so far: You have completed upper secondary education or an equivalent qualification.
• English: You must be able to communicate in English. A certificate such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS is an advantage if you have one, but is not a requirement.
• Field: You have a basic knowledge of the Indonesian language, art or culture, and have a keen interest in these areas.
• Health: You are in good health and can provide proof of this in the form of a medical certificate in English.
• First time only: You have not yet completed a Darmasiswa or KNB scholarship and are not currently studying or working in Indonesia.

How to apply

Apply via the official Darmasiswa online portal between 15 May and 15 June, and upload your documents there. You will then attend an interview at the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in your country. The final selection will be made by the host university.

How realistic are your chances?

This programme is open to applicants from all over the world and is very well known, so many people apply for a limited number of places, and the selection process is highly competitive. Your best chance of success is to present a compelling, detailed profile: a clearly written personal statement and a video demonstrating a genuine interest in the Indonesian language and culture, as well as a basic knowledge of your chosen field of study. Prepare your application documents well in advance and submit your application within the tight one-month window.
