About this scholarship

Grants for Research Projects (IAC Juan Gil-Albert)

You will receive up to 8,000 EUR for a single research project on the culture and history of the province of Alicante. Five grants will be awarded per call for applications. A panel will determine the actual amount per project, up to this maximum limit. The grant is provided by the Instituto Alicantino de Cultura Juan Gil-Albert, a public cultural institution of the Alicante Provincial Council. You may apply individually or as part of a team. The grant is compatible with paid employment or a research fellowship at a university, provided that these funds are used for a different purpose.

Who can apply

  • Who: An individual or a group of up to 5 people led by a principal investigator who is responsible for the project.
  • Your project: The text must be an original work, previously unpublished and written in Spanish or Valencian.
  • Topic: Your project must fit one of the priority topics: Rafael Altamira and the early 20th-century "Silver Age" in Alicante, Alicante's traditional industries, new forms of tourism in the province, or another topic tied to the cultural heritage of Alicante (language, literature, art, history, traditions).
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Age: No age limit.
  • Financial need: Not required. Selection is based on the quality of your project.
  • One entry: You may only apply for one grant or prize under the same call for applications.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Institute’s electronic portal, for which a Spanish digital ID (Cl@ve, a digital certificate or DNIe) is required. In the last call for applications, the deadline was 5 May. During the application period, your project must also obtain ethical approval from the Research Ethics Committee of the Universidad Miguel Hernández. A panel comprising academic staff from the Institute and external experts assesses the projects. It may award fewer than five grants if the standard is too low.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. Your project must focus on the cultural heritage of the province of Alicante and fit within a short list of priority themes, meaning that very few people will meet the eligibility criteria. If your research clearly fits one of these topics and you present a sound methodology and a convincing work plan, your chances of securing one of the five grants on offer are quite good. A topic that does not fit the thematic criteria is the main reason why applicants are excluded.
