About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive 4,000 EUR for a six-month research project on the collections of the Museo Naval in Madrid. The amount will be paid in two equal instalments: 2,000 EUR upon acceptance of the scholarship and 2,000 EUR upon submission of your completed work. The Fundación Alvargonzález, a cultural foundation in Gijón, awards the fellowship once a year in collaboration with the Naval Museum. Your project must deal directly with the museum’s historical, artistic and bibliographic collections and help to raise their profile. One previous project was a virtual exhibition on travel literature from the 16 and 17 centuries, which was created using the museum’s collection of books and maps.

Eligibility

  • Nationality: You are a Spanish citizen.
  • Age: No age limit.
  • Field of study: Any background is suitable, provided your project fits in with the collections of the Maritime Museum.
  • Track record: You may have relevant professional experience, previous work or academic qualifications relating to the subject.
  • Project plan: You should submit a research proposal outlining the research you wish to carry out at the museum.

How to apply

Please send your CV, academic certificates, identity card and project plan by email or post to the Naval Museum in Madrid. The deadline for applications for the 2026 round is 15 May. A panel comprising members of the museum and the foundation will review all applications and select a scholarship recipient within 30 working days of the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

As only one scholarship is awarded each year, competition is fierce. However, the eligibility criteria are quite specific: you must be a Spanish national, have relevant experience in this field, and propose a project that relates to the museum’s collections. If you clearly meet these criteria and submit a convincing, detailed project proposal, your chances are good.
