About this grant / loan

What Canadian Loans give you

If you are Canadian and would like to study at City, St George’s, University of London, this guide will help you to fund your studies using Canadian student loans rather than a scholarship. This is not a university scholarship. Instead, the university will confirm your enrolment, enabling you to take out loans from the Canadian government or private lenders whilst studying abroad. You have three options: federal loans through the ‘National Student Loan Service Centre’ in Canada, provincial or territorial loans from your home region, and private lenders such as GEMS (Global Education Management Services) or the ‘RBC Royal Line’ student loan scheme. The amount you can borrow depends on the lender and your province, not on the university. When applying, please quote the university’s institution code: PUAL.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are taking a course at City, St George’s, University of London, or are applying to do so.
  • Level: Open to students on Bachelor’s programmes, Master’s programmes (where courses are offered) and PhD programmes.
  • Nationality: You are Canadian and are charged international rates.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Loan registration: Your home province or territory must recognise both the higher education institution and your specific course of study in order for a loan to be granted. The higher education institution is listed with most, but not all, Canadian lenders; please therefore check before submitting your application.

How to apply

There is no separate application process at the university. You apply for the loan directly with your provincial or territorial lending agency, or with a private lender, quoting the institution code PUAL. Please note that to obtain a federal loan, you must first apply for a provincial loan. The university’s Student Finance Team can issue the documents required by your lender to confirm your enrolment and student status.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a loan that you must repay, not a competition in which you have to convince a panel of judges. Provided that your province recognises the university and your degree programme, and you meet your lender’s standard eligibility criteria, you are entitled to the funding. Above all, you should check at an early stage whether your specific degree programme is registered with your lending institution, as this is the only condition that could lead to your application being rejected.
