About this grant / loan

What you get

FIDERH gives you a subsidised education loan (not a grant) of up to about 941 EUR per month for the length of your postgraduate programme, up to 36 months. The loan can cover tuition, living costs and health insurance. You can study in Mexico or abroad, at a public or private university. It is run by FIDERH (Fondo para el Desarrollo de Recursos Humanos), a fund managed by the Banco de México, Mexico's central bank.

Because it is a loan, you pay it back. Repayment starts 12 months after you finish and runs over 10 years in Mexican pesos at a reduced interest rate. If you then work full time in research or teaching, at a university or in the public sector in Mexico but outside Guadalajara, Monterrey and Mexico City, the interest can be waived entirely. One extra: if you study at the University of Nottingham, you get a 25% discount on your tuition fees there.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a Mexican citizen, by birth or naturalisation.
  • Age: You are 50 or younger.
  • Degree: You already hold a bachelor's or master's degree with a grade average of at least 8.0 (out of 10).
  • Level of study: You are starting a specialisation, master's or doctorate. The programme must last between 9 and 36 months.
  • Format: Full, in-person study. Purely online programmes are not funded.
  • Admission: You have an unconditional letter of acceptance from the university where you will study.
  • Language proof: You have a language certificate no older than 2 years for the language of instruction. Even if you study in Spanish, you must still prove English (for example TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge English).
  • Guarantor: You have a guarantor (a person who backs your loan, called aval) who is a Mexican citizen living in Mexico, aged 24 to 65, with proven income and a debt-free property as security.
  • Timing: Your programme starts within 11 months of applying, or is already running with more than 6 months of study still to go.

How to apply

Create an account on the FIDERH platform, fill in your data and hand in your printed application with the required documents. For the 2026 round, documents are accepted from 2 to 17 July, on a date set by the first letter of your surname. Every application is evaluated, and results are published on 21 August 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a loan, not a competitive grant, so what counts is meeting the hard conditions and passing the credit check, not beating a large field. If you are a Mexican citizen with the required grade average, an unconditional admission letter, valid language proof and a guarantor who owns a debt-free property, you clear the main hurdles. The guarantor is the practical bottleneck for most applicants, so line that up early.
