About this grant / loan
Banco de México (FIDERH) fee discount at the University of Glasgow
You will receive a 20% reduction on the international tuition fee for a one-year postgraduate programme at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. This is not a cash payment to you. It is a discount that will be deducted directly from your tuition fee bill. This offer is aimed at Mexican students who are already in receipt of a FIDERH loan, an affordable student loan from the ‘Fondo para el Desarrollo de Recursos Humanos’, a trust fund managed by the Mexican Central Bank (Banco de México). The FIDERH loan itself can cover tuition fees, living costs and health insurance. It is generally interest-free whilst you are studying, and repayment begins approximately one year after you graduate. You may only combine this discount with the alumni discount; it cannot be combined with other scholarships or funding discounts offered by the University of Glasgow. If you are offered more than one form of funding, the University of Glasgow will withdraw the lower-value offer.
Who can apply
- Nationality: You are a Mexican national, whether by birth or by naturalisation.
- FIDERH loan: You have an active FIDERH loan with Banco de México. This is the code you can use to unlock the discount.
- Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Glasgow.
- Level: You will undertake a one-year full-time postgraduate programme, either as a teaching or research programme (Master’s degree or the first year of a PhD).
- Field of study: Virtually all fields of study are eligible, ranging from engineering and medical sciences to the humanities and social sciences.
- To get the FIDERH loan itself: You fall under the 50 category, already hold a Mexican degree (Licenciatura, Especialidad or Maestría) with a grade point average of at least 7.8, have received unconditional admission and can demonstrate your English language proficiency through a recent test (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge and others). You will also need a Mexican guarantor with a suitable income and a mortgage-free property in Mexico.
How to apply
You do not need to apply for the discount separately in Glasgow. It is granted automatically upon enrolment, provided you are a FIDERH loan holder. You can apply for the FIDERH loan itself via the FIDERH website. Application rounds (convocatorias) open there several times a year, so there is no fixed deadline.
How realistic are your chances?
The discount is automatically granted if you meet both requirements: having a FIDERH loan and being enrolled at the University of Glasgow. The real hurdle, therefore, is getting the loan approved. This stage is highly competitive and depends on your grades, an unconditional offer of admission and a suitable guarantor. If you clearly meet the FIDERH requirements and apply during an open application round, it is straightforward to also receive the Glasgow discount.
