About this scholarship

What you get

The CONACYT-UCL postgraduate scholarship covers the costs of a Master’s or PhD programme at University College London (UCL) in the UK. This is a joint initiative between UCL and CONACYT, the Mexican government agency for science and technology (now renamed SECIHTI). CONACYT covers your monthly living costs, pays an annual health insurance allowance and covers the majority of your tuition fees. In addition, UCL provides an additional grant of 20% towards your tuition fees. Together, these funds enable you to finance a full postgraduate programme abroad.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a Mexican citizen.
  • The Mexican grant: You have been awarded a CONACYT/SECIHTI scholarship to study abroad. The UCL grant is awarded in addition to this scholarship.
  • University: You have been admitted to University College London in the UK.
  • Level: You are starting a full-time Master’s degree programme or a PhD programme.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.

How to apply

There are two separate steps. You apply for the scholarship directly to CONACYT/SECIHTI, following the procedure set out by the Mexican authorities. At the same time, you apply to UCL for your chosen degree programme. If CONACYT selects you and UCL offers you a place, you are automatically entitled to the UCL tuition fee grant.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria for this funding are very strict: you must be a Mexican citizen, have been awarded a competitive CONACYT/SECIHTI scholarship, and be admitted to UCL, a highly selective university. The biggest hurdle is the Mexican scholarship itself. The UCL grant is not a separate selection process; so once you have been awarded both the scholarship and your place at the university, your tuition fees will be covered automatically. Please note: CONACYT is no longer listed among UCL’s partner organisations. You should therefore check whether the agreement is still valid before relying on it.
