What the John Abernethy (Barts) Scholarship gives you

During the term of the scholarship, you will receive about 5,800 EUR per year (£5,000) in each of the five years of study, provided you achieve satisfactory academic results each year. Four scholarships are awarded each year: three for medicine and one for dentistry. The funding comes from the St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College Trust and is awarded to students who would otherwise be unable to afford to study medicine or dentistry. Note: this scholarship is currently suspended, so it is not open for new students right now.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are currently studying for your first degree in medicine (MBBS) or dentistry (BDS).
• University: You are enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London (Barts and The London).
• Nationality: You are a UK domestic student, so you are studying in the UK.
• Financial need: Your household income is so low that the costs involved might prevent you from studying. This is reviewed every year.
• Grades: You have achieved at least three A-levels at grade A in a single examination session and have performed well in the ‘Fundamentals of Medicine or Dentistry’ module at the end of your first semester.

How to apply

You do not need to complete a separate application form. Once you have enrolled, the school will automatically receive your financial and academic details. Following the announcement of the results for the first semester of the ‘Foundations’ module, it will propose the most suitable students to the Trust for approval.

How realistic are your chances?

Even if one disregards the current suspension, the pool of applicants is very small. Only four pupils a year receive an award. Applicants must have a low household income, three A-levels at grade A and a very good result in their first term. Those who clearly meet all these criteria belong to a small group of applicants who are considered, as the selection process is automated and selects the highest-achieving pupils who also meet the financial criteria.
