Henry Shaw's Scholarship - Henry Shaw's Scholarship Abroad

Benefit

You will receive a scholarship of around 4,000 EUR (approximately 30,000 Danish kroner) to study abroad for at least one semester at a university or equivalent institution. You may only receive this scholarship once. The Danish foundation behind the scheme distributes around 1 million kroner amongst its scholarship holders each year.

Eligibility

• What you study: Any university-level degree programme or equivalent.
• Where you go: You must study abroad for at least one full semester. Work placements and practical placements do not count towards this requirement.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. The foundation is Danish and operates in Danish.
• Family background or need: Your parents hold a senior position in the civil service or are doctors, solicitors or large landowners. If this is not the case, although you have clearly demonstrated an aptitude for higher education, your parents cannot afford the costs involved. Please indicate on the form which group applies to you.
• Timing: You must submit your application before your stay abroad begins. Applications submitted after your stay abroad has begun will be rejected.
• First time: You have not yet received this scholarship.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email, with all documents sent in a single PDF file: your personal statement, your CV, your financial plan, your certificate of enrolment from your foreign university and your academic transcripts. There are two application deadlines each year. Apply from 1 September to 1 November for a spring semester abroad, or from 1 March to 1 May for an autumn semester. Only successful applicants will be notified.

How realistic are your chances?

The rule regarding family background restricts the pool of applicants. As a general rule, one parent must be employed in one of the listed professions, or there must be a clear case of exceptional talent combined with financial need. This results in a smaller pool of applicants compared to open scholarships. If you belong to one of these groups, have a firm offer of a place to study abroad and submit your application in full by the deadline, your prospects are good, as incomplete applications are rejected immediately.
