What you get

At Umeå University in northern Sweden, you will receive a full or partial waiver of your tuition fees. If you are a student from a non-EU country and would normally have to pay tuition fees, this grant will cover all or part of the costs. The university funds the fee waivers itself and awards them once a year in connection with the autumn term. A fee waiver is the only form of support offered here. There are no monthly payments and no support towards living costs, so you will need to cover your rent and living expenses by other means.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are starting a full-time degree programme (Bachelor’s or Master’s) at Umeå University in Sweden.
• Nationality: You are a national of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. Students in this category are generally required to pay tuition fees.
• Field of study: All English-taught degree programmes are eligible, with the exception of the Master’s programme in ‘Sustainability Reporting and Financial Analysis’ (a joint double-degree programme).
• Admission step: You have applied for a full-time degree programme and, by 15 January, indicated a degree programme at Umeå University as your first choice on the national portal universityadmissions.se.
• Fee paid: You have paid the application fee by 2 February. If you are exempt from this fee but still owe tuition fees, you may still apply.
• Already studying there: First-year Master’s students may apply for the second year provided they have paid their tuition fees for the spring semester and are enrolled for that semester. Students who are on a leave of absence may not apply.

How to apply

First, secure your place: by 15 January, select a degree programme in Umeå as your first choice on universityadmissions.se and pay the application fee by 2 February. If you meet the entry requirements, you will receive a personalised invitation from the university by email in early February, containing a link through which you can confirm your interest. You must do this by 4 March at 23:59 CET. A departmental committee will then select successful applicants based on their academic achievements, and the results will be sent by email on 17 April.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is open to a very wide range of students: all high-achieving students from non-EU countries on almost all English-taught degree programmes. The field of applicants is large, and selection depends on your grades. The good news is that decisions are made at faculty level, so you’ll be competing within your own department rather than against the whole university. Good grades and a complete application submitted by the deadline are the prerequisites for making it onto the shortlist.
