The Avancez Scholarships

At Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, you will receive 75% off your tuition fees. This covers all four semesters of a two-year Master’s programme. If you achieve particularly good results and complete your first year in full (60 credit points) with a high average mark, the waiver may be increased to 85% for the second year and to 95% for the final semester. The number of these higher waivers is determined each year. The Chalmers Foundation funds the scholarship, and the university administers it. Please note that it reduces your tuition fees only. Living costs, travel expenses or insurance costs are not covered.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are starting the first year of a Master’s programme at Chalmers. This information is intended solely for new students, not for those already enrolled.
• Nationality: You are a national of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, so you are required to pay tuition fees in Sweden. Students who study free of charge are not eligible for this grant.
• Field of study: Any subject area is eligible. The eligible degree programmes are determined each year and have recently come to include all Master’s programmes.
• Admission: Firstly, you must apply via universityadmissions.se for a Master’s programme at Chalmers and meet the entry requirements for the relevant programme.
• Grades: You have an outstanding academic record. Your weighted average mark accounts for at least 80% of the decision, alongside the reputation of your home university.
• Money: Your financial situation is irrelevant. Selection is based on your grades, not on financial need.

How to apply

First, apply for your Master’s programme via universityadmissions.se and list Chalmers as your first choice. You should then apply separately for the scholarship via the Chalmers scholarship portal. The application deadline for the scholarship is the same as the application deadline for the programme and ends around mid-January. A single application counts towards both the Avancez and the IPOET scholarships. Decisions will be announced between mid-March and the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

Selection is based almost entirely on academic results, so your grade point average and the reputation of the university where you completed your bachelor’s degree are crucial. There is no fixed number of scholarships, and the subject areas and the value of the scholarships are reviewed each year. If you list Chalmers as your first choice and have top marks, you’ll have the best chances. Competition here is particularly fierce amongst outstanding applicants from prestigious universities.
