Denys Holland Scholarship

You will receive about 10,500 EUR per year (£9,000) for up to three years, which amounts to a total of approximately 31,500 EUR over the entire duration of a Bachelor’s degree programme. The grant is paid annually, provided you make satisfactory academic progress. The scholarship is means-tested: it supports students who would otherwise be unable to afford to study at University College London (UCL) in the UK. It is funded by donations from UCL alumni and friends and is named after Professor Denys Holland. You may receive it alongside other grants or scholarships, provided that your total funding does not exceed your tuition fees plus a reasonable living allowance.

Who can apply

• Admission: You have applied for a full-time Bachelor’s degree programme at UCL starting in September, or have already been offered a place.
• Field of study: Any subject or faculty at UCL.
• Nationality: Any country. Both students from the United Kingdom and those from abroad who are classified as fee-paying are eligible to apply.
• Financial need: You can prove that, without this money, you would not be able to study at UCL.
• Involvement: You have interests outside your studies and would like to play an active part in university and student union life, for example through clubs, societies or voluntary work.
• Age: Ideally, you should be 25 or younger when you start your degree.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted to the UCL Student Funding Office. Please submit a short letter outlining your interests outside your studies, along with a statement explaining your financial situation. The application deadline is around 21 July. The selection panel will meet at the end of August, and you will receive a response by mid-October.

How realistic are your chances?

UCL usually awards only one Denys Holland Scholarship per year, so competition for this scholarship is fierce, even though it is open to all subjects and nationalities. What sets applicants apart from others is clear, well-documented evidence of financial need, as well as a genuine intention to participate actively in university life. If both of these are convincing and you apply well in advance of the July deadline, you have a genuine chance of success; however, as there is only one place available, competition remains fierce.
