What you get

You will receive 1,690 EUR per month for a research stay of two, three or four months at a French university, taking place between 1 September and 31 December. You will also receive a one-off travel allowance of 1,900 EUR, health insurance for the entire duration of your stay, and free enrolment at the host university in France. The scholarship is awarded jointly by the Argentine Ministerio de Capital Humano and the French Embassy in Argentina (Institut français d’Argentine). They fund up to four scholarships per year. The stay may form part of a ‘cotutelle’, a PhD programme supervised jointly by an Argentine and a French university.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are an Argentine national and, at the time of application, are permanently resident in Argentina. If you also hold French nationality, you are not eligible to apply.
• Degree: You hold a university degree (Licenciatura or equivalent) from a course of study lasting at least four years.
• Doctoral studies: You are enrolled as a PhD student at a state university in Argentina and have completed the modules for your first year of your PhD.
• Your job: You teach or conduct research at a state university in Argentina, and your vice-chancellor, president or dean supports your application.
• Grades: On average, you achieved a grade of 7 to 10 in your first degree (including unsuccessful attempts).
• Language: You have at least a B1 level in French or English, as evidenced by an official certificate.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Host invitation: You have a letter of invitation from the French university or institution where you will be carrying out your research, stating the exact start and end dates.

How to apply

You apply via the online form and email your scanned documents to the Ministry and the Institut français. The 2024 round closed on 25 April. Calls for applications usually take place between February and April, and the results are announced in June by email and on the websites.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: you must be an Argentine PhD student who is already teaching or conducting research at a state university and has received an invitation from a French host institution, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small. With only four scholarships awarded each year, competition remains fierce. Preference is given to applicants involved in a cotutelle arrangement, those planning to stay for the full four-month period, and applicants from strategic fields such as renewable energy or biotechnology. If you clearly meet the eligibility criteria and prepare your funding and invitation letters well in advance, your prospects are good.
