Barcelona Zoo Foundation research and conservation grant

You get up to 15,000 EUR for a research or conservation project. The project runs for one year from the day you sign the cooperation contract, and you can extend it with a good reason. The Barcelona Zoo Foundation (Fundacio Barcelona Zoo) awards these grants every year to help young researchers build their careers. The money supports projects that study or protect threatened species and habitats, or that improve animal welfare, for example in conservation biology, conservation medicine, new technologies or the care of native Mediterranean species. You can combine the grant with other funding, but you cannot use it to pay salaries. The exact amount depends on the funds available and is decided by the Foundation.

Who can apply

• Career stage: You are a doctoral student or in a postdoctoral phase, at the start of a research career. Projects led by young pre- or postdoctoral researchers score highest.
• Degree: If you apply as an individual, you hold at least a bachelor's or licentiate degree.
• Institution: You belong to a research centre, university, conservation organisation or similar body. That institution confirms in writing that it backs your application.
• Who counts: You can apply alone or as a group, and as an individual or as an organisation. An organisation must be non-profit or reinvest any profit into the funded work.
• Project: Your project is new and original, and fits the Foundation's priority themes on threatened species, habitats and animal welfare.
• Where you work: You can run your project anywhere. There is no restriction to Spain or Catalonia, and international projects are welcome.

How to apply

You send your complete application as a single PDF by email to the Foundation. The deadline for the 2025 round was 21 March 2025. This is an annual programme, and the 2026 round is open with a deadline of 27 February 2026. A jury of scientists reviews each project and decides on the awards.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is narrow on career stage and topic: you must be an early-career researcher with a new project on threatened species, habitats or animal welfare, backed by your institution. That keeps the applicant pool smaller than for open scholarships. If you clearly fit those criteria and propose original work aligned with the Foundation's priority themes, your prospects are good.
