About this scholarship
BritishSpanish Society Scholarship Programme
You get a one-off grant of up to about 10,500 EUR (up to £9,000) for a postgraduate research project or degree that links the United Kingdom and Spain. There is no monthly payment. You use the grant for research materials, travel, academic fees and, if needed, accommodation. The award comes from the BritishSpanish Society, a UK charity that has funded over 123 postgraduates since 2008. It hands out several scholarships each year (six in 2025). Winners are honoured at a ceremony at the Spanish Ambassador's residence in London.
Who can apply
- Nationality: You are a British or Spanish national.
- Level: You are doing a postgraduate degree (a master's or doctorate). You can be in your final undergraduate year or already hold a degree and be about to start postgraduate study.
- Where you study: Your university is in the UK or Spain.
- Field of study: Any subject, from medicine and engineering to linguistics, music or archaeology.
- Research topic: Your project has a clear connection to links between the UK and Spain.
- Confirmed place: You already have an unconditional acceptance for your postgraduate programme and can show a confirmation letter.
- Not eligible: Postdoctoral research or fellowship posts (research jobs held after a doctorate), and people paid a regular salary for the project.
How to apply
You apply by email to the Society with your acceptance letter, an academic reference and the application forms, all in English. The 2026 window runs from 27 April to 26 June 2026. A committee of academics and past scholars shortlists candidates. The corporate sponsors then each pick the applicant that best fits their values. There is no interview.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is narrow: you must be British or Spanish, study at postgraduate level in the UK or Spain, and run a project that genuinely links the two countries. That keeps the field smaller than for open scholarships. Selection rests entirely on your written application, and the project itself carries most of the marks. A well-argued proposal with a strong UK-Spain angle gives a well-matched applicant good prospects.
