About this scholarship
Gabriel Moss QC Insolvency & Restructuring Scholarship
You get a one-off payment of about 11,600 EUR (GBP 10,000) for one academic year to study law at the University of Oxford. The money comes from South Square Chambers, a leading London barristers' set. The award is named after Gabriel Moss QC (1949-2019), a specialist in insolvency and restructuring law who taught on Oxford's law programme. A named scholarship also stands out on later applications, for example when you apply to barristers' chambers.
Who can apply
- Degree: You are starting one of three Oxford law degrees: the BCL (Bachelor of Civil Law), the MJur (Magister Juris), or a one-year research degree, which includes the first year of a DPhil (Oxford's PhD).
- Where you study: You study at the University of Oxford, Faculty of Law. Any Oxford college counts.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply. Your fee status does not matter.
- Career plan: Students who plan to become a barrister are preferred. This is a bonus, not a requirement.
How to apply
There is no separate application. Once you are offered a place on your BCL, MJur or research degree, you are automatically considered for this scholarship. Financial need can play a part in the decision, so it is worth completing the means assessment form that comes with your offer letter.
How realistic are your chances?
The pool is already narrow. You must first be admitted to one of these Oxford law degrees, which is highly selective in itself. Within that group, students aiming for the Bar have an edge, so a clear plan to become a barrister sets you apart. Only one scholarship is given each year, so competition among admitted candidates is real. There is no extra application to lose, since you are considered automatically.
