About this scholarship

What you get

You receive a cash award of £1,000 (about 1,150 EUR) in your first year, then £500 (about 575 EUR) in each of your second and third years. If you study the four-year MSci programme, you get another £500 in the fourth year. The money comes from Royal Holloway, University of London. The award is named after Donald Davies, the British computer scientist who helped invent packet switching, the technique that underpins the internet. You get the money on top of your studies, and it is not deducted from any fee.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a new first-year student starting an undergraduate degree.
  • Subject: You study Computer Science at Royal Holloway.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply. UK and international students are both eligible.
  • Grades: The award goes to the applicants with the strongest final school results.
  • Keeping it: To get the money again the next year, you must score an overall First Class mark in your end-of-year exams. This applies to years one, two and three if you take the four-year MSci.

How to apply

There is no separate application. Every new Computer Science undergraduate applicant at Royal Holloway is considered automatically. Your scholarship is confirmed when you enrol.

How realistic are your chances?

Strong school grades decide it, because the award goes to the best candidates judged on final school results. It is limited to Computer Science applicants at a single university, so the field is narrower than for open scholarships, and you are entered automatically with no extra effort. If your school results are excellent, your prospects are good. You then need an overall First Class mark each year to keep the money.
