European Union - Erasmus - Teaching Assignments

What you get

You will receive an EU grant of up to about 4,690 EUR to cover travel and living costs whilst teaching at a university abroad. The stay lasts between 2 days and 2 months. The exact amount depends on which country you are travelling to, the distance of the journey and how many people from your country are applying. You may receive a higher amount if you have a disability, are bringing children with you or otherwise require additional support. This is part of Erasmus+, the EU programme for educational, study or work placements abroad. It enables you to teach at a partner university in Europe or in a partner country anywhere in the world, and to share your specialist knowledge with students there.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You teach at a higher education institution, for example as a professor, lecturer, research assistant or PhD student who delivers courses. Staff from companies, public bodies, research institutes or non-governmental organisations may also take part if they are invited by a higher education institution to teach.
• Your university: Your home university takes part in the Erasmus+ programme. For a partner country outside Europe, a signed agreement with the host university is required.
• Teaching load: You will be teaching abroad for at least 8 hours per week, or 4 hours if you combine teaching with training. There is no minimum number of hours for employees invited by companies.
• Where you go: A higher education institution in one of the 33 Erasmus+ programme countries or in a partner country anywhere in the world. A stay in a partner country must last at least 5 days.
• Field of study: All compartments are open.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply, provided they are employed at an eligible higher education institution in a programme country or partner country.

How to apply

You do not apply directly to the EU. You apply via your own university, usually through its International Office. The university decides who receives funding and sets its own deadlines; there is therefore no single EU-wide application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a public scholarship. It is a grant awarded by your own university to staff who are already teaching there. If you are a member of the teaching staff and your university participates in the Erasmus+ programme, your main task is to find a host university and get your International Office on board. Places and funding are allocated locally; you should therefore enquire well in advance and submit a detailed teaching plan.
