About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive 700 EUR per month to study for one semester (approximately 5 months) at a partner university in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina or Kosovo. In addition to the monthly grant, you will receive a one-off lump sum of 360 EUR to cover travel expenses. You will also receive an additional 50 EUR if you make at least half of your outward and return journey using low-emission transport such as buses, trains or car-sharing. The total amount is approximately 3,860–3,910 EUR per student. The funds come from the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme and are administered by the University of Beira Interior (UBI) in Covilha, Portugal. If you are already receiving a grant from the Portuguese DGES for social engagement, UBI will award an additional supplement.

Who can apply

  • Your university: You are enrolled at the University of Beira Interior (UBI).
  • Study level and field: You are at least in the 2nd year of a Bachelor's in Political Science and International Relations, or in a Master's in International Relations or Political Science.
  • Where you go: You are studying at one of the three partner universities: the European University of Tirana (Albania), the University of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) or the University of Pristina (Kosovo).
  • Erasmus limit: You have not yet reached the 12-month Erasmus+ limit for your current cycle of study. All previous Erasmus+ stays and work placements count towards this limit.
  • Length of stay: You will be studying abroad for 2 to 12 months. The usual duration of the stay is one semester.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at UBI.

How to apply

You first submit a pre-application at UBI through the Virtual Counter of Academic Services (Balcao Virtual dos Servicos Academicos). The second application phase runs until 28 November. A points formula ranks applicants. It weighs your grade average, extra enrolment years, outstanding credits and scholarship status. Selected students are then nominated to their host university and apply there once notified.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is strictly limited. It is aimed exclusively at students of Political Science or International Relations at UBI, and the number of places is limited (12 in the last round of awards). This keeps the pool of applicants small. So, if you are studying the right subject at UBI and have good grades, your chances are good. Selection is based on a transparent points system, so a good grade point average and few outstanding credits will help you move up the ranking.
