About this scholarship
What these scholarships are
You can receive a scholarship from a foreign government or institution to study or carry out research abroad. The country awarding the scholarship will pay you a monthly stipend (a fixed monthly payment to cover your living costs). The amount, the fields of study and the exact conditions depend on which country you go to. The scholarships run for 1 month for summer language courses and up to 9 to 10 months for research work. Some country programmes offer longer study periods. Mexico, for example, funds Master’s programmes for up to 24 months. The Camões Institute, the Portuguese government agency for linguistic and cultural cooperation, does not pay out these scholarships itself. It collects and publishes the offers submitted by foreign embassies. The countries currently listed include Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Croatia, Andorra, Argentina, Mexico and Egypt.
Who can apply
- Nationality: You are a Portuguese citizen. This is the only fixed rule that applies to all offers.
- Level: Depending on the country, internships, postgraduate programmes, Master’s programmes and PhDs are available.
- Field of study: All subject areas are open. Many scholarships focus on learning the language and culture of the host country or on research in any field.
- Where you go: You are studying or conducting research in the country awarding the scholarship.
- Language: You can demonstrate that you have the language skills required by the host country’s regulations.
- Acceptance (research grants only): You have a letter of acceptance from the institution abroad and a work plan.
How to apply
Each country runs its own call for applications with its own deadline. You can apply either via the Camões Institute or directly through the embassy of the country awarding the scholarship. Deadlines vary from country to country. For example, the call for applications for Mexico 2026 closes on 22 June 2026. The authorities of the awarding country will make the final decision and inform you of the result.
