About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive up to about 7,605 EUR for a one-year full-time Master’s degree programme in Mechanical Engineering. If you complete the programme on a part-time basis over two years, the amount is usually split into instalments of up to approximately 3,800 EUR per year. Funding for the second year is conditional upon satisfactory academic progress. The scholarship is awarded by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the UK’s professional body for mechanical engineers. It will help you to meet the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Three scholarships are awarded each year.

Eligibility

  • Residence: You must be living in the United Kingdom at the time of application.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they live in the United Kingdom.
  • Degree: You are due to start an IMechE-accredited Master’s degree programme in the next academic year and have already been offered a place. The programme may be either teaching- or research-oriented. ‘Accredited by the IMechE’ means that the institution recognises the qualification as a prerequisite for professional registration.
  • First degree: You have obtained, or are expected to obtain, a degree with a ‘First-Class’ classification or 2:1 from a BEng (Hons) programme accredited by the IMechE.
  • Membership: By submitting your application, you will become an associate member of the IMechE. If selected, you will become an associate member.
  • References: Three people have spoken in favour of your application: one regarding your academic abilities, one regarding your suitability for the Master’s programme, and one regarding your personality.

How to apply

Complete the IMechE application form and submit three references by 1 August each year. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is presented to only a select few. Just three are awarded each year. You must have achieved an outstanding final result in a recognised mechanical engineering degree and have secured a place on a recognised Master’s programme. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a well-suited candidate with a 2:1 or a ‘First’, as well as strong references, has a genuine chance of success. In the interview, your suitability for the chosen degree programme is just as important as your grades.
