What you get

Whilst studying at one of the engineering schools of the Institut Mines-Télécom (IMT), such as Télécom Paris or Télécom SudParis, you will receive a means-tested grant. Payments are made monthly, and the total annual amount is approximately 2,511 EUR to 6,335 EUR, depending on your family’s income. You are also fully exempt from tuition fees. At Télécom Paris, these amount to 3,600 EUR per year for students from the EU and 5,700 EUR for some students from non-EU countries. The IMT is France’s largest public network of engineering and management Grandes Écoles. The funds come from government sources and are paid out via the CROUS, the regional public body that administers French student finance.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled on a standard engineering degree programme (formation initiale) at an IMT university in France and are aiming to obtain a national qualification such as an engineering degree or a national Master’s degree.
• Financial need: Your family income falls within the CROUS income limits. You can check this before submitting your application using the free CROUS simulator.
• Study type: You are a regular student, not a trainee, and you are not taking part in any further education. These individuals are regarded as employees rather than students.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. As an international student, you are eligible to apply provided you have been part of the French tax system for at least two years.
• Field of study: You are studying engineering or business administration at an IMT university. Specialised MSc and Mastère Spécialisé programmes are not usually covered.

How to apply

You apply for funding via the CROUS by completing the ‘Dossier Social Étudiant’ (DSE), the standard French application form for student financial support, online at messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr. There is no interview. The decision is based solely on your family income. You will receive a provisional confirmation, which you must present when you enrol at your higher education institution.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a means-tested grant. If your family income falls within the CROUS income limits and you are enrolled as a full-time engineering student at an IMT university, you are eligible for it. There is no selection process for a limited number of places. According to Télécom SudParis, more than a third of eligible engineering students receive a grant each year. If you meet the income thresholds, you should apply as early as possible to ensure that your first payment is made before the start of the semester.
