About this scholarship
Hungarian state scholarship for a semester abroad
You will receive monthly grant of about 130 EUR (approximately 43,700 HUF; PhD students receive a higher amount) for a study period of 3 to 10 months at a Hungarian university, research centre or art college. The Hungarian government will also cover your tuition fees in full, provide a contribution towards your accommodation costs and provide you with health insurance in accordance with Hungarian regulations. This is an intergovernmental scholarship administered by the Tempus Public Foundation. It is aimed at students who wish to undertake a study visit to Hungary without obtaining a full degree there.
Who can apply
- Study level: You are a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD student. You are coming for a part-time or semester-long stay, not to complete a full degree.
- Field of study: Any subject is possible. You can study in Hungarian or in English.
- Nationality: Your country must have an agreement with Hungary. This applies to most of Europe (including Austria, Germany, France, Italy and the UK) as well as to Canada, the USA, Japan, China and South Korea.
- Where you live: You must not already hold a permanent residence permit, a settlement permit or be in employment under Hungarian labour law. Persons with dual Hungarian and foreign nationality are not eligible to apply.
- Age: You will be at least 18 when your academic year begins.
How to apply
Please apply online via the scholarship.hu platform by 19 February for the following academic year. Depending on your country, you may also need to be nominated by your national scholarship agency. Applications will first be checked for eligibility and then assessed by external experts. You will be notified of the result by email.
How realistic are your chances?
The eligibility criteria are broad: many countries, all fields of study and three levels of qualification. The pool of applicants is therefore not exactly small. However, the scholarship is rather modest and geared more towards short exchange stays than a full course of study, which limits demand. If your country has an active agreement with Hungary and you can present a clear study plan, your prospects are good. It is advisable to apply early within the application period.
