The McColgan Engineering Scholarship

You will receive about 1,150 EUR (£1,000) per academic year, renewable for up to four years, amounting to a total of approximately 4,600 EUR (£4,000) for the duration of your degree programme. The amount is awarded as a reduction on your tuition fees. The McColgan family funds this merit-based scholarship, and only one student is selected each year. It is aimed at outstanding undergraduate students studying engineering at Ulster University in Northern Ireland.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are a full-time undergraduate student.
• Course: You are studying one of the eligible engineering degree programmes, such as biomedical engineering, electronics and embedded technology, mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering and manufacturing technology, renewable energies or electrical engineering and electronics.
• Where you live: You live in Northern Ireland or in one of the Irish counties of Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan or Louth.
• Grades: You have achieved at least 40 more UCAS points than the minimum entry requirement for your degree programme. UCAS points are the standard measure used in the UK to assess your final exam grades.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted via your faculty secretariat, the administrative office of the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Computer Science, Engineering and Intelligent Systems. For the academic year 2026/2027, the application period begins after the end of the first semester, at the start of 2027. You can obtain further details from your faculty secretariat.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, so competition is fierce, even amongst those who meet the eligibility criteria. However, the eligibility criteria are very strict: you must be enrolled on a specific engineering degree programme, live in a designated area and exceed the programme’s entry requirement by 40 UCAS points. If you clearly meet all these requirements and are well above the minimum score, you’ll find yourself among a small, well-matched group of applicants with genuine prospects.
