What the Mexican Government Excellence Scholarship gives you

You will receive monthly stipend (a fixed monthly payment) of about 760 EUR (MXN 14,264.88) to study in Mexico. This applies to a full Master’s programme (up to 24 months) or a full exchange programme at Bachelor’s or Master’s level (up to 12 months). For research stays as part of a PhD or postdoctoral position lasting from 6 to 12 months, the scholarship increases to approximately 950 EUR (MXN 17,831.10) per month. The scholarship also covers your enrolment and tuition fees at the host university and exempts you from the Mexican visa fee. From the seventh month onwards, you will be covered by health insurance through the Mexican social security system (IMSS). Upon successful completion of the programme, you will also receive a return economy-class flight (for nationals of eligible countries) as well as domestic travel within Mexico, should your university be located outside Mexico City. The scholarship is administered by AMEXCID, the Mexican Government’s Agency for Development Cooperation, which operates under the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Who can apply

• Level: You are undertaking a standard Master’s degree programme, an exchange programme at Bachelor’s or Master’s level, or a research placement as part of a PhD or postdoctoral fellowship. Activities relating exclusively to the writing of your thesis are not eligible for funding.
• Where you study: You are studying full-time and in person at one of the 90 participating Mexican universities.
• Field of study: All compartments are open.
• Nationality: Open to nationals from more than 170 countries. You must apply from your home country and must not hold Mexican nationality at the same time.
• Age: You must be at least 18 when you apply.
• Grades: Your average mark is at least 85 out of 100 (8.5 out of 10).
• Language: You are applying in Spanish. If Spanish is not your first language, you will need a Spanish language certificate at level B2 or higher (CEFR).
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other scholarship from the Mexican Government and did not receive a scholarship from a Mexican federal authority last year.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online in Spanish via the SIGCA portal. For round 2026, the application period runs from 21 May to 22 June 2026. Successful applicants will be notified by email in early July. You may only submit one application.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a large-scale government programme open to 170 countries and therefore attracts a large number of applicants. However, places are allocated by country and university, which means that the number of applicants of a particular nationality remains manageable. Good grades (85/100 or higher), a sound knowledge of Spanish and a complete application submitted by the deadline are the factors that set applicants apart from the rest. First-time applicants to AMEXCID who apply early are given preferential treatment. If you clearly meet the requirements and submit your application early, your chances are good.
