About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a net salary of about 1,650 EUR per month (subject to any adjustments) as well as an allowance for on-call duties. You will undertake a one-year training programme at a public hospital in Paris. Each year, 35 doctors are recruited as ‘Resident Etranger des Hopitaux de Paris’ (REHP), a training programme for foreign doctors. At the end of the programme, you will receive a certificate, which will be presented to you during a ceremony at the Académie Nationale de Médecine. The hospital will also help you settle in with a welcome day and a partner programme for student accommodation. The programme is run jointly by the “Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris” (AP-HP), the network of public hospitals in Paris, and the “Collège de Médecine des Hôpitaux de Paris” (CMHP). Please note that you will be responsible for covering the costs of travel, accommodation, health and liability insurance, as well as any tuition fees. This scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a doctor from a country outside the EU. Doctors from the EU, Switzerland or the EEA have not been able to apply since October 2024.
  • Qualification: You hold a degree in medicine or pharmacy. Depending on your status, you will either undertake specialist training (Stagiaire Associé, practical training without enrolment at a university) or training under the DFMS/DFMSA programme, either during or after your specialist training.
  • French: You must have at least a B-level knowledge of French2. You must provide evidence of this in the form of a certificate from a recognised body, such as the French Embassy or the Alliance Française, or – if you completed your degree in French – a certificate from your faculty.
  • Backing: A department head at an AP-HP hospital has agreed to take you on to their team and is writing a letter of recommendation for you.
  • DFMS/DFMSA route: If you choose this route, you must first submit a separate DFMS/A application to the University of Strasbourg.
  • First time: You have never taken part in a REHP year before.

How to apply

Please submit your complete application online via the form on the CMHP website by 15 January, in order to start in early November of the same year. A selection panel comprising doctors and staff from AP-HP and CMHP will meet in the spring to select the 35 junior doctors. All applicants will be notified of the outcome by email from the beginning of April.

How realistic are your chances?

With only 35 places per year and strict admission criteria, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships, but competition is still fierce. You will need a non-EU medical degree and a solid knowledge of B2 in French. Above all, you need a head of department in Paris who has already agreed to take you on – which is the most difficult part of the process. If you have this support and meet the language and academic requirements, your prospects are realistic.
