About this scholarship

What You Get

The Richard Plaschka Fellowship pays €2,500 per month to researchers in historical sciences who come to Austria to work on Austrian history topics. The fellowship runs for 4 to 12 months, with an extension possible up to 18 months. Researchers from outside the EU, EFTA, or OECD countries also receive a one-off travel allowance of €1,200. Fellows are exempt from tuition fees. After completing at least 12 months, you can apply for follow-up support (additional financial and material assistance).

As a fellow, you can work as a visiting researcher at a university department, or carry out specialist studies in libraries, archives, or research institutions in Austria.

Important Notice

The OeAD has announced that 15 September is the last application deadline before this programme ends. No further rounds are planned after that.

Who Can Apply

  • Field: You work in historical sciences — including history, archaeology, linguistics, literary studies, or art history — with a clear focus on Austrian history.
  • Career stage: You are a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD/doctoral student, or a young university teacher. Applicants from university systems that do not use the habilitation (a post-doctoral qualification common in German-speaking countries) are explicitly welcome.
  • Teaching record: You have teaching and publication experience that can be assessed.
  • Nationality: Open to applicants from all countries except Austria.
  • Research focus: Your work centres on Austrian history or historiography, and you emphasise cross-border scholarly cooperation — especially in the Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern European region.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted online. You will need to provide:

  • Completed online application form
  • Two letters of recommendation from university professors (dated and signed, issued no more than six months before your application)
  • A signed supervision agreement from your host institution in Austria
  • A copy of the photo page of your passport
  • Copies of your university degree(s) and academic qualifications
  • A detailed description of your research project in Austria, plus a bibliography
  • Proof of a teaching obligation
  • Confirmation of your university employment

Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by the Richard Plaschka Fellowship Commission.
