About this scholarship

Van Calker Scholarships

You will receive CHF 1,500 per month (about 1,600 EUR) for a research stay lasting from 2 to 3 months at the Swiss Institute for Comparative Law (SICL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Institute will also organise and cover the costs of your accommodation during your stay. You will work on your own project in the field of comparative law, foreign law or international law, making use of the Institute’s library and contacts. During your stay, you will give a lecture to present the results of your work to the Institute’s legal professionals, guests and other researchers. Several of these fellowships are awarded each year.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are working in the field of law, for example as a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher. Other researchers are also welcome to apply.
  • Field: Your project focuses on comparative law, foreign law or international law.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply, whether they are Swiss or foreign nationals.
  • Where you go: As you will be carrying out your work at the institute in Lausanne, you must be able to spend 2 to 3 months there.
  • Letter of recommendation: Required for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers; ideally from your supervisor. Optional for other researchers.
  • Who is encouraged: The institute particularly welcomes individuals who have limited access to research funding.

How to apply

You send your application by e-mail to the Institute's contact person. The deadline is 15 August of the year before your planned stay. So to come next year, apply by 15 August this year. You submit a one-page motivation letter, a CV, a two-page research proposal and, if required, a letter of recommendation. You can write these in French, German, English or Italian. Incomplete applications are not considered.
