Ranke-Heinemann Academic Foundation - Travel allowance Ranke-Heinemann (Australia / New Zealand)

What you get

You will receive a grant of one-off payment of up to 1,000 EUR towards your flight to Australia, New Zealand or Canada. You are responsible for organising the flight yourself, including choosing the airline, any stopovers, an open-jaw route or a round-the-world ticket. The scholarship is awarded by the Ranke-Heinemann Institute (IRH), an agency that places students at universities in these countries. Each year, the Institute awards 5 grants: 2 for studies commencing in the first half of the year and 3 for the second half of the year. Grant recipients are selected by lottery, so your grades and your income do not play a role.

Who can apply

• Where you live: You live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
• How you enrol: Enrolment is handled by the Ranke-Heinemann Institute, not directly by the university.
• Where you go: You are studying in Australia, New Zealand or Canada.
• Length of study: Your stay abroad will last at least 2 months.
• Field of study: Every subject, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
• Proof of place: You have already accepted a place at university and can provide proof of this, for example with a certificate of enrolment.
• Other funding: You can still apply for this grant even if you are already receiving other scholarships.

How to apply

You will be automatically registered when you apply for a place via the Ranke-Heinemann Institute. A separate application is not required. You must have accepted your place by the deadline: 1 February for a start date in the first half of the year or 1 July for the second half of the year. Only successful applicants will be notified, by 5 February or 5 July respectively.

How realistic are your chances?

The winners will be selected by lottery; it is therefore purely a matter of luck and not a competition based on grades. Anyone who meets the basic requirements has an equal chance. As only 5 scholarships are awarded each year, your chances depend on how many people in your intake apply via the Institute. Make sure you start your university application well before the deadline, as you must already have been offered a place at university to be eligible for the draw.
